Technology is changing all the time and at PCD we like to keep up with these changes.
Google Launches Internet Browser
Google is launching Chrome – an internet web browser to rival Firefox and Internet Explorer. This will help Google take of advantage of online developments in rich web applications which are challenging traditional programs.
These developments include a suite of web applications such as Documents, Picasa and Maps – which are all starting to replace offline software.
The launch of Chrome is further competition for Microsoft who currently monopolise the PC business, with 80% of the market their Internet Explorer dominates the browser landscape. Another well respected browser provider, Mozilla, hold only 20% of the market which proves how difficult it is to break into this area.
Chrome is no
w available for download.
Nokia Launches Music Phone in UK
The new handset from Nokia ‘Comes with Music’, only available from Carphone Warehouse, will give people access to a store that holds 2 million tracks.
Although this is less than the music available through Apple iTunes it is forecast to become a major competitor. The service gives users a year of unlimited access to the store, they can download the music to their PCs and continue to hold it after this period.
The majority of analysts see this launch as a test-bed for a global launch in the future, although so far none of the mobile operators have signed up to the service – possibly to avoid conflict with their own mobile music services.
The Nokia music catalogue is now available to anyone who buys the 5310 Nokia handset.
The mobile future
Mitchell Baker – the chair of the Firefox developer Mozilla – has made a plea to harness the creativity of the internet and apply it to mobile phones. She believes that the functionality should be the same if she is on a laptop or a phone, at home or on the train.
Marc Davis from Yahoo has said that the future will be about mobility – the number of handsets worldwide is nearly 4 billion which proves its popularity. He believes that soon more people will be able to access the internet via their mobile phone rather than their PC.
Analysts predict that we will see an improvement in the technology for our handsets in 18 months – increasing the potential for mobile marketing.
At PCD we keep on top of technology and where relevant will apply this to marketing campaigns.
